You've got an email list! Yay, you. But now what? Use the 5 follow-up strategies that I'm using right now to date my email list.
1) THE EMAIL SEQUENCE
According to Online Marketing Institute, it takes between 7 and 13 touch points, meaning emails, ads, etc., to make a sale. This number can go up to 20 touch points and may take a year or two to convert a fan, follower or subscriber into a customer.
For this reason, after you receive an email from an opt-in, event, etc., it's important to front load a sequence of emails to touch bases with them over time.
When someone opts in to my free resource library, a series of emails automatically goes out to them every 1, 3 or 7 days. I still have work to do to create more emails, but at this point, I'm connecting with them around 7 times.

2) RESEND EMAILS TO NON OPENERS
This probably sounds obvious, but sometimes we forget about these simple ideas to increase open rates. I decided to test this a few days ago and increased by open rate by 12%. Here's what happened. I'm currently offering a promotion for my Graceful Graphics workshop to the people who follow me on Instagram, and those who are members of the free resource library.
I decided to send an email to the free resource email list inside Mailchimp, but not everyone opened it - of course. So I decided to send the exact same email one week later to a segmented group of subscribers who DID NOT open the original email. An extra 12% of my subscribers opened the email. Yay!
Next, I will test a new subject line and I may tweak the first paragraph and resend it to those that didn't open this last email. I'll update and let you know what happens!
3) DATE YOUR LIST WITH MORE VALUE
People opted in to your list because they found value in your original lead magnet or giveaway. Don't let them forget about you or feel like you are just selling to them. Give them even more value in the form of industry news, controversial topics within the industry or even another free piece of content or giveaway. Date them so to speak, and allow them to feel special and cared for.
4) SHOW UP TO THE SAME PARTY AS YOUR LIST
You have your subscribers email and that is great! They've let you into their home in a way, but sometimes your list goes out to a party, and you want to show up and remind them you're still interested in them and have value for them.
The best way to do this is with a Facebook Ad. Your list is likely partying on Facebook and if they see an ad for your product, giveaway, blog post or freebie, they'll remember you and what they've received from you in the past. Maybe your email ended up in the promotions tab of gmail, or they forgot to go back and open your email. Now that they're on Facebook in a relaxed state, they're more likely to click on your ad and enter your value circle again. They may even go back and dig up your emails. Win/Win!
And No. 5 is my favorite strategy of all...
5) KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF WITH A SURPRISE
What is one surprising thing your list would not expect from you? If you want to borrow this idea from me, go right ahead. What I've done in the past is load up a bar-coded Starbucks card, take a picture of the bar code and send it inside an email! You can load up the card with whatever your budget allows, but this is a fun way to tell your list that you love them and want to show it buy giving them a morning mocha to start their day.
All they have to do is show the bar code to the barista right from the email on their cell phone and they get a free drink on you! How cool is that?
