We need to talk. The reason is, I don't want you to ride the ebb and flow of pure joy and utter defeat at running your own business. There are some myths running rampant out there like $1 Jimmy John sandwiches on promo day. There are some serious things you need to be aware of before you quit your 9 to5, or even if you've been at your small business for a while.
MYTH #1 - IF YOU'RE TALENTED, EXCEPTIONAL, AWESOME - PEOPLE WILL WAIT IN LINE FOR WHAT YOU'RE OFFERING
The reality is, just because you write it, record it, teach it, capture it and put it out there, doesn't mean that they will come. This was a big lesson that took my whole journey as a business owner to realize. The truth is, you have to coddle your creative endeavor until it has sprouted some wings to fly on its own. Meaning, that awesome portfolio, expertly recorded podcast, or 7-hour blog post must be tailored to fit in with the crowd. It can't just show up to the party and expect to fit in with the cool kids. You have to make introductions, let people get a feel for it, and eventually trust it. This process can take months. But, take heart. With time and consistency your creativity will fit in and start running the show.
MYTH #2 - BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR HOLDS THE PROMISE OF SLIPPERS AND PAJAMAS 24 SLASH 7.
Well, in total transparency, yes it can. However, this is not a place you want to be in for the long haul. There are those lovely rainy days, chilly days, cloudy days, where staying slippered up is a nice perq, but it can also make you feel lazy, unaccomplished, like you don't have a real job. This can wreak havoc on your psyche. My advice to the new entrepreneur is to get up like you have to drive work, slap that lipstick on and get dressed. You will thank you for it.
MYTH #3 - OWNING A BUSINESS MEANS $10K MONTHS AND $60K LAUNCHES
No, it does not. What you're hearing about are the outliers (or downright liers) who want you to buy their bogus courses, online programs or can of spam. No and no! If you listen closely, the true entrepreneurs locking down this kind of sum have been at it for years - not overnight. Please don't fall into the trap of thinking that everyone who owns their own business is literally raking in the dough. Most of them are in debt above their heads. You, my friend, are smart and talented and will pace yourself and your expenses and spend time where you are likely to connect with potential customers and create major lazer value.
MYTH #4 - I'LL GET TO SIT WITH MY FEET IN THE SAND WHILE MY BUSINESS RUNS ON AUTO
We all love Tim Ferriss and his 4-Hour Work Week, but the title is not literal and there is a lot of work that goes into a passive income. A lot of work. A lot of work. Don't even think about 'toes in the sand' until you've got 100 videos under your belt, 20 free pieces of value you're willing to give away, $3000 in automation Saas products, an email list of 1000, 200 blog posts, 100 podcast episodes, etc. You have to work really hard up front in order to sit back and relax in your thong. And besides, if you love what you do, you want to work at it, nurture it, grow it. I hope I've busted this myth for you.
MYTH #5 - I'LL GET TO WORK FROM WHEREVER
Partly true. But I can tell you that those Starbucks chairs do get uncomfortable after a while and raising your voice above the other Starbuckers to chat with a client gets a little old. Paying for a space is nice, but it means you have to put down an insurance rider of possibly $2 million dollars, eek! I've done work in both of these scenarios, and my advice is to have a dedicated space at home in order to get your work done. If you need to get out, do so, but only to unleash your creativity. Work is work, and isn't meant to do wherever. Get 'er done and then go wherever you want!
I hope this post was useful for you. My goal is to help you learn from my mistakes so you can do what you do better. I've seen so much chatter about launches and monthly income posts and on and on. I don't live on the fringe of reality and I don't want you to either.
I will say this. You are amazing and talented. You will have money coming in the more consistent you are. And there will be days you can sit in your comfies or work from a lodge on Whistler mountain and you will create passive income sometimes while you sleep. It's all possible, but you will have to work, work, work, work, work, work.
